Positector SPG - Surface Profile Gauge

The PosiTector SPG Surface Profile gauges measure and record peak to valley surface profile heights. A durable Alumina wear plate and tungsten carbide needle probe replaces the dial gauge specified in the Australian standard allowing quick data logging of the surface profile of blasted steel or textured coatings. 

The Surface Profile gauge is on of the standard probes include with a PosiTector Inspection Kit.

Conforms to AS 3894.5-C (with optional 30° tip angle), ASTM D4417-B, SSPC-PA17, U.S. Navy NSI 009-32, SANS 5772 and others.

Theory

Surface profile gauges are used to record the surface profiles on blasted or otherwise prepared metals before coatings are applied. The PosiTector uses method C - Needle-Type Depth Micrometre from the Australian Standard AS 3894.5-C.

A depth measuring probe with a 30 degree angle needle, tip radius 20 μm is set to a zero from an undamaged plate glass surface. Multiple measurements are taken, low readings discarded and the mean used as one test area. The average profile height is then recorded. 

How to select your probes

For testing blasted steel or other metal an SPG or SPG S along with an accessory 30 degree tip probe is suitable for testing in Australia, an SPG OS is useful for testing over convex surfaces with the same 30 degree tip. The SPG CS probe has a greater measuring range but is suitable only for measuring textured coatings.

This profile gauge is designed for fast tracing of complex contours. The two 20 cm long elements holding the tracer pins are easily slotted together to meet specific requirements. The elements can also be connected at an angle using the angle connector that is part of the product package. The template’s flat and even contact surface makes for easy transfer of the traced profile line to other workpieces. There is no restriction on the number of elements that can be slotted together.

Note:
This device is fit for purpose, but in terms of quality fails to match the profile gauges at the top of this page. Above all the plastic connections are fairly stiff to begin with and the angle connector will need a light tap when maneuvered under the screw hole for the first time. In the middle section, the tracer pins can be securely locked; towards either end the holding strength diminishes, ie, the pins here are more likely to slip out of position.
